I am new to using resistance bands and unsure of what size I need. Can you help me?

Below is a basic breakdown of the Serious Steel bands. Check out our band exercise page for more information on how to use them!

We carry seven sizes, each having a different level of resistance and please do not hesitate to contact us if you are still not sure after viewing the information below.

#0 (ORANGE) BAND. This band measures 1/4" wide, 4.5 mm thick and 41" in length. It offers resistance from 2-15 lbs. This band provides our lowest level of resistance and is great for light stretching, high-performance speed training and sports specific training. It is also great when combined with our other size bands for that little extra "boost"!

#1 (PURPLE) BAND. This band measures ½" wide, 4.5 mm thick and 41" in length. It offers resistance from 5-35 lbs. This band is a great beginner band for resistance exercises that range from bicep curls, squats or even overhead shoulder press. The #1 is also great if you are looking to do speed work by adding the band to your bench press, deadlift or squats.

#2 (RED) BAND. This band measures 13/16" wide, 4.5 mm thick and 41" in length. It offers resistance from 10-50 lbs. The #2 band offers a moderate level of tension for resistance training. Exercises like bicep curls, triceps extensions, overhead shoulder press or even overhead squats.

#3 (BLUE) BAND. This band measures 1 1/8" wide, 4.5 mm thick and 41" in length. It offers resistance from 25-80 lbs. The #3 band provides a strong amount of tension for the resistance training of small muscle groups (arm curls) and moderate resistance on the larger muscle groups (banded squats). These are great for stretching, speed and agility training or even adding them to your barbell for bench press, squat or deadlifts.

#4 (GREEN) BAND. This band measures 1 3/4" wide, 4.5 mm thick and 41" in length. It offers resistance from 50-120 lbs. The #4 band is our most popular band and is perfect for stretching and heavy resistance training. This band offers a heavy tension and can be used with your barbell for bench press, squats or deadlifts. Make sure to be cautions with your first couple of uses as the kinetic energy created by this band tension can be difficult to control.

#5 (BLACK) BAND. This band measures 2 1/2" wide, 4.5 mm thick and 41" in length. It offers resistance from 60-150 lbs. The #5 band is one of our strongest bands and most commonly used to obtain maximum resistance with squat, deadlifts, leg presses and shrugs.

Seven sizes of bands:
  • #0 (Yellow) Band 2.5 mm. (2-15 lbs. of resistance)
  • #1 (Purple) Band 1/2"  (5-35 lbs. of resistance),
  • #2 (Red) Band 13/16"  (10-50 lbs. of resistance),
  • #3 (Blue) Band 1.125"  (25-80 lbs. of resistance),
  • #4 (Green) Band 1.75"  (50-120 lbs. of resistance),
  • #5 (Black) Band 2.5"  (60-150 lbs. of resistance),
  • #6 (Orange) Band 4"  (90-250 lbs. of resistance).

Can I combine bands at the same time?

Absolutely! Do you think you need a #4 band, but concerned it may be too much tension? You can purchase multiple smaller bands to equal the tension of heavier bands. Try the #2 & #3 instead of the #5 or try the #3 & #1 instead of the #4 band. Combining multiple sizes gives you more levels of tension because you can use them individually or you can use them at the same time.

Why our bands are different:

Unlike solid-cast rubber resistance bands, Serious Steel Fitness resistance bands are made from premium Sri Lankan latex though a layering process.  The bands have 15 continuous layers of latex which help with the durability, longevity as well as help prevent the band from snapping.  It is important to note that like many other fitness and gym accessories, resistance bands do have a life cycle.  After repeated use, as well as after wear and tear, bands may begin to peel.

Why am I being charged sales tax?

Serious Steel is required by law to collect sales/use tax on orders shipped within Virginia and Washington.

California Prop 65 Disclaimer

Attention California Residents:

As explained in more detail below, California's Proposition 65 requires special warnings for products that contain, or will expose a consumer, to chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm if above certain threshold levels.

The general Proposition 65 notice for products containing or comprising of plastic is as follows:

WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

California Proposition 65 Warning

In recent years, the above stated warning can be found in a wide-range of products including hospital equipment, toys, clothing, furniture, and even fitness equipment.

Serious Steel, LLC., products meets all US and EU safety standards. While Serious Steel, LLC., continues to stand behind the quality and safety of its products, as it has done for the past 10 years, Serious Steel, LLC., joins other manufactures in providing the Proposition 65 notice for products that might be subject to California law.

The widespread use of the label is a result of the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, commonly known as Proposition 65.

What Does the Warning Really Mean?

The warning does not mean that the products will cause cancer or reproductive harm. Indeed, while California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard lists over 800 chemicals found in everyday products that it deems harmful, the state agency notes that a product containing the warning, as a result of the presence of the listed chemicals in the product, may not be in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements. Instead, the warning functions to notify the consumer that the chemicals contained in the product, if used under certain conditions, might exceed the "no significant risk level" exposure for cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm.

For cancer, no significant risk means not more than one excess case in 100,000 individuals exposed over a 70-year lifetime. In English, this means if an individual is exposed to the listed chemical every day for 70 years, it would theoretically increase his/her chances of developing cancer by more than 1 case in 100,000 individuals exposed in the same manner.

As for birth defects or reproductive harm, no significant risk means not more than 1/1000th of the "no observable effect level." The "no observable effect level" is the highest dose level that has been shown to not pose any harm to humans or lab animals. So, no significant risk in this regard is the "no observable effect level" divided by 1000.

Why Include the Warning?

The State of California imposes substantial penalties for failing to comply with the notification requirements of Proposition 65. In addition, the costs to defend against a claim of violation from all who are allowed to bring a lawsuit on behalf of the State (including private law firms and individuals) can easily cripple a business. As a result, Serious Steel, LLC., and many other manufacturers in various industries have elected to provide the notice to prevent what could be an endless wave of groundless lawsuits even though the level of exposure is well within legal limits.

Further, as is the case with many other manufactures, our products can be found throughout the country. So as to ensure compliance with Proposition 65, the warnings can be found even in areas outside of the State of California.

As previous noted, the penalties for not complying with Proposition 65 are steep.  As a result of the potential penalties, and because there is no penalty for providing an unnecessary warning, Serious Steel, LLC., as well as many other manufacturers, have elected to provide this Proposition 65 notice out of an abundance of caution in order to avoid the potential for liability.

Serious Steel, LLC., products are sold nationwide.  It would be extremely difficult and costly to determine which products will be ultimately sold or brought into California.  Therefore to insure compliance with Proposition 65 requirements, we have decided to include these warnings for all our products, regardless of origin.
